Make your own double broiler

Have a recipe with a delicate sauce?  Making candy?  Need a double broiler?  Here is how I save money by not buying a double broiler.  I prefer to spend money on things that I will use quite a bit and make do without for things that I will not use much.  I also can’t stand the clutter of things that don’t get used.  So here is how I was taught as a child to make your own double broiler.  I have been doing this for many years.

Place a smaller pan inside one that is a bit larger, filled with water.  This method keeps the sauce, candy or whatever you are melting, from getting “burnt” or just too hot.  As the water in the lower pot gets hot and comes to a low boil, the heat transfers to the upper pot. Just make sure that you don’t have too much water in the lower pot that it boils into the upper pot.  You also want to make sure that when you are stirring the upper pot that you don,t allow water to come in as you increase pressure.  The key is to not overfill or under fill the lower pot.

Do you use this same method?

Pyrex – I do Love You

I have an undying love for Pyrex.  It ranks quite high in my favorite kitchen supplies.

I love …..

….. that you can see into it without opening it.

….. that the lids always fit.

….. that I don’t have to worry about chemicals leaching into my food when I heat them.

….. that you can freeze in them.

….. that you can store anything in them.

….. that you can bake in them.

….. that you can mix in them.

….. that they are so clean and shiny.

….. that they don’t get stained.

….. that they don’t melt.

….. that they are easy to clean in the sink.

….. that they can go in the dishwasher.

….. that they are versatile.

….. that there are so many different kinds.

….. that they are re-usable.

….. that they are colorful.

I love everything about my Pyrex.

I do not love this plastic stuff.  You make my blog post not so appealing.

I’ve been hanging onto you for a while.  Trying not to waste.  I don’t like you.  My family doesn’t like you.  It’s time you leave.  Goodbye plastic storage’s.  Enjoy your time in the yard sale pile.  You will not be missed.  You will be replaced.  More Pyrex will take your place.

I’m thinking the small Pyrex bowls with lids, the 8 inch baking dish ….. but for now …..

One more picture to get those yucky plastic things out of your mind …..

Do you have an undying love for Pyrex, plastic?  Do you have something else in your kitchen that you absolutely love?
