Food Waste Friday: A little person struck again

Each week I will be joining The Frugal Girl in Food Waste Friday in an effort to reduce our food waste.  Nothing like going public with my waste to keep me in check.  Since joining in the effort I have been paying more attention to what we waste and making sure we use it before we lose it.  Not only does this save money, it is also a step towards being more “green”.

FoodWasteFriday
I only thought I had no food waste.  I started typing this post to tell you that I had no food waste this week and alas I remembered that a certain little person, or person sometimes known as the little princess, left another one of these not quite finished yogurts in the fridge.  I found it a couple or few days later, open with spoon still in it.  It was strawberry this time.  She must have liked it a little better than the banana cream pie.  I do believe this one only had a spoonful or so left in it, but it’s still waste.

Not too bad of a week for us.  Our refrigerator is fairly clean after a few weeks of traveling in July.  Maybe I can keep it that way.

If you struggle with food waste, try using Pyrex for storage.  Being able to see what’s in the containers without opening them helps me to use items up.  Not only are they see thru, but they are glass.  I love having anything with less plastic.  The lids are plastic, but do hold up very well.  I like to call them quality.

How did you do with food waste this week?  Care to share?  What do you do to help lower your food waste?

Food Waste Friday: The little people

I thought I had no waste in my refrigerator until I spied this little fella stuck way in the back of the refrigerator looking much like someone changed their mind.  I have a pretty good feeling that one of the little people are responsible for this food waste.

I don’t feel like I did too bad this week.  It can always be worse.

Food Waste Friday: A lone cucumber

FoodWasteFriday
It’s been a while since I got a food waste post up, but I have actually been working to minimize our food waste.  Last week I had to throw out a large amount of potato salad left over from the graduation party.  It had been in the refrigerator for a good month.  It was hard to do ….. very hard to do.

This week I am happy to report that I only have a lone cucumber to waste.  We grew this cucumber in our garden.  It may be one of the last I get, but it’s quite wrinkly and soft.  I know it’s hard to tell from the picture, but I promise it is.

Good new is that I will give this cucumber to the goat.  It will be a nice treat for him.  If I didn’t have a goat I would surely add it to my compost.

I am happy to report that for the second week in a row, I have no food waste.  I also have a pretty empty fridge.  Hopefully I can report no waste again next week!

How did you do with food waste this week?  Hope everyone had a good food waste week.  If you have a problem with food waste, why not join in the effort and post in the comments how you do each week?  I promise that the public accountability will help you.

This week I am happy to report that I have not a bit of waste!  It probably has a lot to do with the ridiculous fast food expense last week, meaning we probably didn’t cook a thing to have anything to waste.

Hope everyone had a good food waste week.  If you have a problem with food waste, why not join in the effort and post in the comments how you do each week?  I promise that the public accountability will help you.

Happy Friday!

Food Waste Friday: I Cannot Be Held Responsible

I cannot be held responsible for the tomatoes.  I’m not sure who opened the can and what they were used for, but I didn’t know they were there or I would have thrown them in a bag for the freezer.  It appears to be almost a whole can.  A whole smelly can!

The pumpkin will also need to join the smelly list.  I was going to make pumpkin bread with it one day, but realized I didn’t have enough brown sugar, so I made pumpkin muffins.  The recipe didn’t call for brown sugar, and it used much less pumpkin.  The muffins were edible, they got ate, but not nearly as good as pumpkin bread.  Says something for brown sugar and pumpkin now doesn’t it?

I’m going to put the pumpkin in the compost and give the tomatoes to the chickens.  They love tomatoes.
